Many holistic treatments can be beneficial in regards to animals, especially birds, that may be more sensitive to traditional medications. One such treatment involves the use of apple cider vinegar (ACV). ACV has many vitamins such as beta-carotene, minerals like potassium, and other nutrients and substances to improve the health of your bird. ACV can be used to assist in restoring normal intestinal flora. It has been shown to contribute to the control of yeast and gram-negative bacteria in birds that are not showing outward symptoms of infection without integrating the use of prescription medications. Antibiotics commonly wipe out beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract and may cause additional imbalances, whereas the use of probiotics can often restore balance to the digestive system without creating additional complications. ACV is considered by many to be the best probiotic supplement for parrots. In addition, apple cider vinegar is typically simple to administer to birds as ACV can be added directly to drinking water. Although ACV decreases the presence of bacterial growth, water should still be changed daily. As always, we recommend you consult your avian veterinarian prior to starting any at home treatment to ensure that the treatment is what is best for your feathered friend.
